From 2 million Muslims in 1970 to almost 2 million residents in Italy at the end of 2015.
The Islamic presence is growing rapidly in our country and the number is destined to increase. The sociologist Massimo Introvigne, director of the centre for the study of new religions (Cesnur), makes clear that at the moment it is not yet possible to speak of "Islamisation", a term used more in countries where Muslims are in a clear majority.
"The data is striking," explains Introvigne to AdnKronos - also due to the fact that in 1970 there were between 2000 and 3000". Unlike other countries such as France or England, where the trend is constant over decades, the growth in Italy has come more quickly."
