Faced with the large number of refugees, the federal finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble says the mood in the CDU [Merkel's party] base for dramatically "bad". The great support in the party, as reported by CDU General Secretary Peter Tauber, for Chancellor Angela Merkel's policy is not apparent to him, Schäuble declared in the most recent session of the CDU Presidium, reports "Spiegel". If the new asylum package does not have a rapid effect, the relationship of the party leadership to the base will be damaged, in his view.

Bavaria's finance minister Markus Söder (CSU) [Bavarian sister party of the CSU] declared that the handling of the refugee problem raised the question of the continued existence of the Union [the coalition of parties that Merkel represents]. "The subject is of fundamental significance for the future and the existence of the Union. Internal security is a core issue for the Union," said Söder to the "Bild" newspaper. "We do not want to be a variant of the Greens, but remain a clear non-Socialist alternative. If we fail at the job, the AfD and others will permanently establish themselves. For that reason, CDU and CSU must come together."
