"The results of the recent European Championships in Zurich, dominated by Great Britain and France, don't leave us any other choice," said the president of the Russian Athletics Federation.
According to the September 10 edition of Novye Izvestia, Valentin Balakhnichev is calling for more black athletes to be granted citizenship so that Russia can be at the top of the podium more often.
"Black athletes, who constitute the backbone of the British team, brought that country 14 of its 23 medals," he notes.
"At this time, we are doing almost nothing to attract young black talent into our team in order to preserve our dominant position in this sport, in Europe and the world. Worse, I have been the target of endless attacks for my efforts in this direction."
At the European Championships in Zurich, Russia finished 4th in the medal table with 22 medals, including only 4 golds.Source: RTL
